The 9 Planets in Vedic Astrology Explained
In Jyotish, 9 celestial bodies called Grahas shape every aspect of human life. Understanding each planet's nature is the first step to reading any birth chart.
In Vedic astrology, the 9 planets (Navagrahas) are not just astronomical bodies โ they are cosmic intelligences that influence every aspect of human life. Each planet rules certain qualities, body parts, professions, relationships, and time periods (Dashas).
Surya โ The Sun โ๏ธ
Surya is the soul of the Kundali. It represents your father, government, authority, leadership, and ego. A strong Sun gives confidence, vitality, and recognition. A weak Sun can cause issues with self-esteem, health (heart, eyes), and relationship with authority figures. Surya rules Leo and is exalted in Aries.
Chandra โ The Moon ๐
Chandra governs the mind, emotions, mother, home, and the public. It is the fastest moving planet, changing signs every 2.5 days. A strong Moon gives emotional stability, intuition, and a calm mind. An afflicted Moon can cause anxiety, depression, and troubled relationships with women. Chandra rules Cancer and is exalted in Taurus.
Mangal โ Mars ๐ด
Mangal is the planet of energy, courage, siblings, land, and action. A well-placed Mars gives drive, physical strength, and decisiveness. An afflicted Mars (especially in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house) creates Mangal Dosha, which can affect marriages and create accidents or conflicts. Mangal rules Aries and Scorpio.
Budh โ Mercury ๐
Budh governs intellect, communication, business, skin, and the nervous system. A strong Mercury makes a person intelligent, witty, and business-savvy. Retrograde or afflicted Mercury can cause communication issues, learning difficulties, and skin problems. Budh rules Gemini and Virgo.
Guru โ Jupiter ๐ก
Guru is the greatest benefic in Vedic astrology. It represents wisdom, wealth, children, husband (in a woman's chart), religion, and luck. Jupiter's transit (Guru Peyarchi) is one of the most important annual astrological events. A strong Jupiter brings abundance and spiritual growth. Guru rules Sagittarius and Pisces, and is exalted in Cancer.
Shukra โ Venus ๐
Shukra governs love, beauty, marriage, luxury, arts, and pleasure. A strong Venus blesses with charm, artistic ability, and good relationships. An afflicted Venus can cause issues in marriage, reproductive health, and a tendency toward indulgence. Shukra rules Taurus and Libra, and is exalted in Pisces.
Shani โ Saturn ๐ช
Shani is the planet of karma, discipline, hard work, delays, and lessons. Often feared, Saturn is actually a teacher โ it rewards sincere effort and punishes shortcuts. Saturn's 7.5-year transit (Sade Sati) over the Moon is a major life period. A strong Saturn brings perseverance and eventual success. Shani rules Capricorn and Aquarius.
Rahu โ The North Node ๐
Rahu is a shadow planet (no physical body) that represents obsession, ambition, foreign elements, technology, and sudden events. It amplifies whatever planet or house it touches. Rahu is associated with unconventional paths, illusion, and material desires. In the right placement, Rahu can bring sudden fame and success.
Ketu โ The South Node โญ
Ketu is the other shadow planet, opposite Rahu. It represents spirituality, past-life karma, moksha, detachment, and psychic abilities. Where Rahu creates desire, Ketu creates disinterest. A strong Ketu placement can make someone highly spiritual or deeply intuitive. Ketu is exalted in Scorpio.
๐ Key Insight: Every planet behaves differently based on the house it occupies, the sign it is in, and how other planets aspect it. A 'malefic' planet like Saturn can give excellent results in the right house, and a 'benefic' like Jupiter can cause harm if poorly placed.
